How to Improve Spray Tanning Experience

Spray tanning is a great way to get a deep and dark tan without having to spend hours in a tanning bed or having to expose yourself to the sun. Without the dangers of skin exposure, finding the right type of spray tan can be challenging. Usually when anyone is considering having a spray tan, there are a few questions they want to know before having it done.

In order to understand spray tans, consider the pigments used in the tan. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the ingredient in spray tans that is responsible for the darkening of the skin pigment. DHA works by staining the top layer of skin which is comprised of dead skin cells. Since DHA only works on the top layer of skin and doesn't penetrate into the epidermis, the length of a spray tan depends on several factors.

For anyone who has ever wanted to know how long spray tanning lasts, the amount of time varies between 7-12 days. However, in order to keep the spray tan around for the maximum amount of time, there are a few steps that can be taken.
How to Make your Tan Last
Always exfoliate right before going to have a spray tan done. Many people don't bother with this step, but sloughing off the top layer of dead skin cells will help to reveal newer skin underneath that's going to stay around for much longer. This simple step can dramatically improve the length of the spray tan.

After having the spray tan, the dye in the tan, much like a typical paint, will need some time to set before it really sticks to the skin. Experts recommend waiting at least six hours before taking a shower, a bath, or going swimming. This will help the DHA in the paint to become absorbed into the skin cells and stick around for much longer. Also try to avoid any strenuous activities in that six hour period. Sweating can cause the spray tan to run, leaving the skin with a streaky appearance.

Since the DHA is present in the top layer of skin, taking steps to care for that skin is the best way to keep a spray tan around for a longer period of time. Using a daily moisturizer is a great way to protect skin and keep it from become dry and sloughing off. By moisturizing your skin, there is a decreased turnover of dead skin cells, leading to a better self-tanning experience.

Be careful about showering and bathing also. Even after that six hour window, staying too long in the water can still cause the spray tan to be washed away. Taking shorter showers or baths will help to prolong the life of the spray tan. Also, avoid exfoliating products and tools while having a spray tan. Shaving also removes the top layer of skin, so try to avoid shaving or shave minimally while having a spray tan.

These are the basics about spray tans and how long they typically last. If these tips are followed, a good spray tan should last up to 12 days easily.
